Dr. Maria Van Kerkhove of the World Health Organization (WHO) on Friday addressed the new numbers emerging from China regarding the novel coronavirus pandemic, which added an additional 325 cases and 1, 290 deaths from Wuhan, China.

Dr. Van Kerkhove said the cases had been discovered by reviewing a number of different databases for duplication or missing cases. She said the discrepancy in the number of cases was due to several factors, including the fact that some patients had died at home as hospitals were overrun, that medical staff had been delayed in reporting cases and that reporting hadn’t been completed in a timely matter in some makeshift hospitals.

Van Kerkhove joined director-general of the WHO, Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, and other doctors during a briefing about the global response to COVID-19.

The organization also welcomed singer Lady Gaga, who provided an update on the One World: Together at Home broadcast on April 18, which will bring together a star-studded lineup of entertainers to raise funds for the WHO.

Lady Gaga called the broadcast a “love letter” to health-care workers and all those working in essential services.

The WHO also emphasized that containment of the novel coronavirus “is possible” and that the virus had been brought under control in a number of countries around the world.
