A protest in New York City in solidarity with Portland turned into riots on Saturday, with tension escalating between New York Police Department (NYPD) officers and demonstrators.
Protesters could be seen smashing police vehicles windows, throwing projectiles and cursing law enforcement officers, as some rubbish cans were set ablaze. Police officers could also be seen detaining a protester.
Portland has been undergoing a wave of protests and unrest ever since demonstrations against racism and police brutality started a couple of months ago, with episodes of violence on the rise ever since federal agents were deployed by Trump to tackle the incidents.
The White House has defended the use of force against protesters and accused local authorities of having "lost control" of the city.
