U.S. President Donald Trump held a press conference on Tuesday at the White House as Russia announced it had approved its first COVID-19 vaccine.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said the vaccine, developed by Moscow's Gamaleya Institute, was safe and that it had been administered to one of his daughters.

Trump announced during the briefing that the U.S. has penned an agreement with drug-maker Moderna Inc. to acquire 100 million doses of its potential COVID-19 vaccine. The U.S. has made several deals to acquire doses of potential COVID-19 vaccines in advance of their approval by regulators, as part of its Operation Warp Speed program that aims to deliver a vaccine in the country by the end of 2020.

Trump also reacted to an earlier announcement that Sen. Kamala Harris would be Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden's running mate in the upcoming presidential election. He said he was surprised Biden chose Harris as his running mate because she had been disrespectful to the former vice-president during the debates, in his view.

On Monday, Trump's press conference was interrupted after he was escorted out of the room by a Secret Service agent following gun shots outside of the complex. Trump returned to the media room after several minutes and said a person had been shot by law enforcement and transported to the hospital. He said he understood the suspect had been armed.

The U.S. has a total of over 5 million cases of COVID-19 and more than 166,000 deaths.
